Wow... what a moving story of redemption. The characters were so raw: I felt their pain, grief, loyalty, and shame. Amir embodied that which makes us human: the fear that keeps us from doing the right thing under extraordinary circumstances. I was enraged with the decisions Amir made, while also feeling sorry for him... I felt the same way about Amir's father. This is a difficult task to accomplish as a writer; to have a reader accept the characters' humanity while being fully aware of the revulsion of their actions: kudos to Hosseini.

The amazing background history of Afghanistan melded so seamlessly within this engrossing story. I never knew what a tragic recent history the Afghan people endured, and I applaud Hosseini for enlightening us.
