In reading this novel, I was fascinated to learn about the history of the Children’s Aid Society and how the events depicted in the story contributed to what is now recognized as the beginning of the foster care system in the United States. Despite the predictability of the plot, I enjoyed the vacillation between the two main characters (and time periods) in the story. Honestly, however, the present-day story wasn’t as captivating as the historical aspect. I also felt as though the serendipitous meeting midway through the story was not only foreseeable, but also did not relay the true emotional impact an event akin to that would produce. That scene almost fell by the wayside, despite its significance. However, this was unquestionably a worthy read, and an enjoyable one, at that.
