๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿ‘ถ Out of Sorts, by Aurรฉlie Valognese

This was a remarkably quick read, perfect when one is feeling under the weather. Unfortunately, there’s nothing to set this story apart from the rest. Coincidentally read on the heels of one of my favorite novels to date, “A Man Called Ove”, this novel pales in comparison. However, this tale about a grouchy octogenarian, does have its redeeming qualities. Firstly, for such a short novel, the characterization is respectable. I grew to appreciate the main characters, and thought they were well-represented. In addition, having been written in third person, present tense, I was surprised that the author did not get caught up in the minutia of everyday life, which is often the case with novels written in such a manner. Perhaps that is why this novel was a satisfactory read.

On the other hand , I was taken aback at the complete reversal in thought and behavior of the main character from the beginning of the novel to the end. There was simply no solid basis for his sudden rosy outlook on life. Also, the situations he landed in were quite improbable, which led to the necessity for suspension of disbelief. Again, having been written in the present tense, that task proves difficult.

All in all, I enjoyed this Kindle First book, but had the unfortunate expectation of something more.
