This is one of those books that stays with you for some time. It was absolutely fascinating, especially to someone who had very little knowledge of the old traditions of Chinese culture. The plot is meticulously woven and lured me in from the beginning. The foot binding scenes were nauseating, and almost unbearable, drawing in all of my senses, as only an superior literary work can do. I laughed, cried, and cheered for these women who were considered so inferior in this culture at the time. Not only did the author absolutely do her research, but what also came across was her love for her characters; that commitment only made the novel that much more captivating.
