This was a thought-provoking, insightful, coming-of-age story that touched on the complexity of human nature. Francie was a child, wise beyond her years, and incredibly perceptive. My heart ached for her, specifically her mother's feelings toward her. However, I admired her strength and was convinced from the beginning that she would eventually persevere. Honestly, however, it was a slow start for me, and it wasn't until mid-way through the book that I became engrossed. However, I'm very glad I stuck it out. It was a beautiful, moving story.
