I had no idea of any of the history of the Tennessee Children's Home Society prior to reading this novel. I am always in awe of authors who find these stories and shed light on such horrors. The wickedness of Georgia Tann and all of her complicit cohorts, is unspeakable, and it saddens me to think of the terror those poor children went through.
I will admit that Rill's story set in the past, was much stronger than the more current-day story with Avery. Avery's part seemed much more contrived, and unrealistic. Personally, I would've enjoyed following Rill's POV for the entirety of the novel. She was a much mightier force, and had a more captivating voice. This is the only reason the novel didn't receive 4 stars for me... the historical aspect could've been fleshed much further without the current-day political drama.
However, kudos to Ms. Wingate for enlightening her readers, and sharing some little-known history with us. Overall, it was an enjoyable, yet heartbreaking read.
