Oh Joe Siple, you got me good! I was certain the sweetness of this novel was just too much, that it would be too predictable, and that it would produce far more eye rolls than tears. Boy was I wrong. I am honestly unsure what brought me to read this gem of a novel, but I am so incomprehensibly glad I happened upon it. It is just the feel-good story I needed... that many of us need. It brings to light the good in many people, the joy in life too often taken for granted, and the ways in which human beings can either sabotage or embrace that joy. It was a simple story with a profound message, and the characters will be forever emblazoned on my heart. Mr. Siple has written an extraordinary, emotional, sentimental story about the power of love.
Mr. Murray McBride is so much more than just an old, cranky curmudgeon, and Jason isn't just your run-of-the-mill 10-year-old boy. Their lives intersect unexpectedly and tell quite the story. Tiegen, Jason's neighbor and friend is just the icing on the cake with her indomitable spirit. Together, they form an unstoppable trio that partakes in adventures that may seem a bit unrealistic on the surface, but more often than not, fill the space in one's heart that longs for a little magic.
So bring out the tissue box and prepare yourself for a moving journey with a very unexpected outcome.
