Another Summer 2021 novel that I never quite got around to reviewing๐. Playing catch-up is never fun...
๐Because I'm a huge fan of The Lost Generation, I have primarily read novels set in the 1920s in Paris, paying little mind to Great Britain and the US during this time. So, I really enjoyed learning a bit more about the state of affairs in both countries during the golden age, especially when it comes to the Vanderbilts. And who doesn't love a little British royal scandal every now and then๐คท♀️?
✍️Bryn Turnbull writes with fluidity and keeps her audience interested throughout. The characters were privileged and certainly not likeable; but the entitlement was to be expected with the elite class. Of course, as I've mentioned before, I hate infidelity, and even though it was socially acceptable during this time, it just leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Of course, that's just a personal issue, and has no bearing on my review.
Most of all, I love historical fiction that teaches me something! I had no idea that Gloria Vanderbilt had a twin and that they were in any way connected to the British ruling class. I also knew little about the Vanderbilts in general other than having visited the Breakers long ago. I've since learned so much - who knew Anderson Cooper was the younger Gloria Vanderbilt's son - I feel like I've been living under a rock๐ฒ!
