Of all three of Celeste Ng's novels, this one was by far her best work, imho. I'm a big fan of dystopian novels, and this one really brought a terrifying possibility to life. With all the hatred and bigotry in our nation these days, this scenario, sadly, doesn't seem too far off base.
Bird was a formidable character, and I loved exploring the overriding theme of the power of words through his eyes. Margaret's first act of courage and love, although predictable, speaks to the lengths one will go to for their own children. Her final act of bravery and love was surprising and powerful. The gravity of being silenced was palpable in this novel, and the consequences that come with banning books for reasons stemming from fear was timely.
Bravo, Ms. Ng. This novel was effectual and generated meaningful discussion at our book club meeting.
