Sister Mother Warrior
I was finally able to tackle this beauty, and boy, was it worth my time!

Powerhouse, Vanessa Riley certainly impressed me with this historical fiction saga of the Haitian Revolution. The novel is based on two extraordinary historical figures: Marie-Claire Bonheur, the first Empress of Haiti, and Gran Toya, a formidable West African female warrior. Together, they assisted in the uprising that ultimately freed enslaved Haitians.

Riley calls to mind the courageous revolutionaries and innumerable women who fought for freedom. This was an exceptional read that taught me so much about something that just isn't discussed in the history books.

Many thanks to wonderful Bibliolifestyle and William Morrow Books for this noteworthy novel.
