Shin writes with a melancholic undertone about a time of political upheaval in South Korea. The tale was replete with tragedy, yet persisted with a sliver of hope to balance the sorrow. Shin has a way of writing with restraint, possessing an ability to express such complexity with so few words. I generally struggle with books that have such little joy, and yet the author kept my attention, and did not fail in accurately conveying the historical details.
