Sadly, I knew very little about Beryl Markham and the contribution she made to modern-day aviation, as well as her less-known success as a racehorse trainer. The author did a fine job working in all of her more well-known accomplishments along with some lesser known facts in this inspiring work of historical fiction.
Ms. McLain also has such an articulate manner of writing, that she allows the reader to experience the sheer breadth and scope of the African savannah. It was a magnificent journey from Markham's youth into adulthood, intertwined with a mรฉlange of adventures that one could only dream of achieving in one lifetime. Markham certainly led an astonishingly full life, and McLain was the perfect author to bring those accomplishments (along with some enticing conjecture) to life.
