The funny thing about me reading this memoir is that I've only ever watched snippets of Fixer Upper here and there, so I don't think I was actually the Gaines' intended audience. However, so many of my friends and family members have raved about the show, that when this book came up as a daily deal, I just had to jump on it! I believe that one of the main things that attracts people to this dynamic duo is their sincerity and genuine nature, and those same qualities shine through in this memoir as well. Their share their sweet love story, their marital frustrations, and their parental joys, and allow us to take that journey with them.
I learned that they each have an unusual mixture of humility coupled with an air of quiet confidence (okay, well maybe Chip's isn't all that quiet), all while exuding normalcy, and this must be what their fans have gravitated toward all these years. It was also edifying to learn how grounded in faith they are, which is unusual for celebrities nowadays, and to also witness their focus on family.
The book was fun, fresh, and written differently than most memoirs, as it alternated viewpoints between the two halves of this charismatic couple. I learned so much about their journey, and chuckled at their antics along the way. It was truly a fun read!
