This was the first fictional novel I have ever chosen for my book club. I truly appreciated the multi-dimensional moral dilemmas this author presented. The decisions made by the characters in the book allowed us to have an honest and opinionated discussion about different cultural expectations and norms, and how those affected these women’s choices. There was a resounding dislike of Maggie, and true fondness for Lakshmi.
I think the likelihood of these two women ever becoming friends was so slim, that it certainly made for an engaging read. Their ability to hide their truest selves was both frustrating and understandable. I especially enjoyed the major twist, as I certainly never saw that coming! I suppose the ending could have been a bit stronger, but perhaps the author was going for ambiguous?
