๐Ÿ‘ถ๐Ÿ‘ถ The Sympathizer, by Viet Thanh Nguyen

Oh my word, I trudged through this one… I have long felt very ignorant with respect to the Vietnam war and the circumstances surrounding it, so when this novel came up long ago, as an Audible daily deal, I jumped on the chance. Although Nguyen certainly informed me (hence the generosity of 2 stars), I thought the long-winded narrative would never end. There were whole chapters that could have been excluded, while still rendering the plot viable. Several scenes were gruesome beyond necessity, and none of the characters even merited a second glance. Although there were satirical moments, I just couldn’t enjoy them as I mulled through the rest.

I feel terrible judging a novel so harshly, as the author surely poured his heart and soul into this novel. I do appreciate his intent in writing the novel, and welcomed his ability to educate readers from a communist operative’s perspective. It suppose it just wasn’t my cup of tea.
