Unfortunately, this seems to be a compilation of completely disjointed thoughts. I was hoping the memoir would benefit my mother-in-law, but found that it may be of little use to those grieving. This review is not meant, in any way, to minimize the author’s loss and pain, but these chapters seemed more like non-linear journal entries to help her process all that happened to her. The book offers little in the way of wisdom of how she dealt with the loss, but instead offers an abundance of references to medical statistics, which I would posit most readers in this situation are not looking for.
Ms. Didion suffered through immeasurable loss in a very short period of time, and I can not even begin to imagine her pain. I assume this was her way of getting through the pain, and for that reason, I certainly cannot fault her. However, I would caution anyone attempting to find consolation in her words.
