Kristina McMorris has done an exquisite job of compelling her readers to join her on a bittersweet journey of desperation, loss, and hope. The joy of good historical fiction lies in the acquisition of obscure factual knowledge through compelling fictional content. Ms. McMorris has done a marvelous job of piecing together an unforgettable tale that both educates and astounds.
To think that the aftermath of both World Wars left people in such dire situations that they considered selling their own children seems unfathomable. Yet, in researching further, it was indeed a stark reality for some families in order to simply subsist. What made it most tragic is that everything that happened to those sweet children was so beyond their volition... they were never given a chance to determine their own destiny.
Most interesting to me, was the author's reason for writing this novel. To have come upon a picture from 1948, and delved so far into its origins as to envision a better future for those children, shows the compassionate nature of Ms. McMorris.
Many thanks to Kristina McMorris, Sourcebooks, and Goodreads for gifting me with this novel in exchange for an honest review.
