The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society

What a lovely novel. I always appreciate when authors take us on an unexpected journey, especially one that involves learning more about historical events. This story, told in a melange of written letters between characters, delves into post-World War II Guernsey, an island off the coast of Great Britain. Through this correspondence, the reader learns about how the residents of this small island dealt with the uncertainty of the German occupation, and all of the sacrifices that were made during this terrifying time.

I fell in love with each of the quirky characters, which were often amusing, and sometimes touching. I absolutely adored how the author sprinkled novels of note into the story, causing me to research various authors I'd never considered reading before. Throughout the story, the joy of reading is illuminated as a way to escape the horrors of war.

Now that I've finished the novel, I look forward to watching the film!
