I've said it before, and it seems I will continue to sing her praises until I've read all her novels: Amy Harmon is an absolute force to be reckoned with! I have now read an American historical fiction novel set on the Oregon trail, an enchanting fantasy/time traveling tale set in Ireland, a WWII historical fiction story set in Italy, and now a Norse mythology legend... all written by this masterful author who can cross genres as adeptly as I can change outfits. I have truly never seen the likes of her work.
This time, we join young Bayr of Saylok on a mythical adventure as he maneuvers life in a land that was unknowingly cursed by his deceased mother just after his birth. Born with strength greater than mere mortals, Bayr, who is but a child himself, is tasked with safeguarding Alba, the first and only female child born in well over a decade, in a land ruled by a tyrannical king.
Let me just say, I am not a fan of mythology and I struggle immensely to suspend my disbelief long enough to enjoy such story lines. Enter Amy Harmon, and "mayhaps" any preconceived notions I had about mythology have been shattered. She allowed me to fall in love with her characters because it was so evident that she truly loved the characters herself. I was fully immersed in each of their quests and I felt their pain, frustration, dedication, and perseverance throughout the adventure.
Bravo, Ms. Harmon! You've captivated me yet again!
