I honestly can't believe I've never thought of the origin and history of our current-day dictionary! Kudos to Pip Williams for writing an incredibly well-researched historical fiction novel that truly illuminated the beauty and importance of words.
Creative and compelling, πΏππ π―πππππππππ ππ π·πππ πππππ is an ode to the countless hours, days, months, and years sacrificed by the many lexicographers in the late 19th and early 20th century. This beautiful novel is also an acknowledgement of the unrecognized women who worked alongside the lauded men during this process.
Lengthy but resplendent, this story spoke to my heart and allowed me to form deep bonds with the delightful characters along the way. I'll admit, I shed tears with Esme, felt her frustration, and sensed her longing and I was here for all of it. It was a very touching novel that spanned a lifetime and put into perspective how ephemeral life can be. Ms. Williams allows her readers to appreciate the value and significance of every word in the English language, along with the worth and dignity of every individual that contributed to this enormous endeavor.
