This memoir was as jarring as it was hopeful. It allowed me to call to mind the depth of pain refugees undergo and the ever-present feeling of loss once they escape their harsh circumstances. This book highlights the fact that there are so many broken families from war-torn countries and so many tragedies on their journey to safety.
Never has this reality been so apparent to me as it is right now while I've been helping Afghan refugees settle into their new lives here in the US. It nearly breaks me to see these mothers and small children with such eager faces approach in hopes of attaining some bare necessities for their new homes.
I've said before, and will say again, we are so incredibly privileged to live in the US with our freedom and relative peace. We still have a lot of injustice to overcome in this great nation, but it is stories like Enjeela's that remind me just how blessed we truly are.
