I'm so disappointed that Roth churned out such an inferior conclusion to her trilogy. I devoured the first 2 books in 2 days. This one took me over a month.
Not only was it a monotonous read, but the characterization was lackluster compared to how she distinguished the protagonists in her first two books. Neither Tris nor Four's actions, speech, or thoughts set them apart in this third installment; I continuously found myself returning to the beginning of each chapter to determine who was talking. The dual points of view were an obvious departure from her writing style in the previous 2 books which, unfortunately, gave the climax away from the get-go. Furthermore, the ending served no purpose, primarily because the plot was SO weak this time around.
The cliff hanger from the previous book was underdeveloped in this finale; Edith Prior simply became irrelevant. The incredible suspense so enjoyed in Divergent and Insurgent went out the window in Allegiant. In addition, there was an abundance of irrelevant chapters and individuals with no real flow.
All of the characters were not only weak, but inconsistent with previous descriptions. Apparently Evelyn couldn't make up her mind if she wanted to be super villain, as she was initially portrayed, or sentimental supermom. Tobias, previously characterized as strong and dependable, became suddenly insecure and unreliable. Caleb, once so brilliant, surely had rationale in succumbing to Jeanine's directives to betray his sister so dreadfully - not so much. Then there's good old nefarious Peter, no wait he's now just Peter the Follower. Ugh!!!
